The endangered Atala butterfly found only along the south-east coast of Florida is apparently expanding its range and has in recent years appeared for the first time at several locations on the south-west coast and most recently in the Everglades.

bethunebakeri, can survive in greater numbers when protected by the Florida carpenter ants. The
carpenter ants will protect the caterpillars from predators in order to feed off of their sugary secretions.
